Cannabis Technology – The Latest Trends in Cannabis

Cannabis has been one of the most controversial topics, merely because a lot of people are on either sides of opposing or supporting it. Over the years, lots of states have legalized marijuana both for medical and recreational use. You can even easily find legal cannabis near you. Just like that progress, cannabis technology has also been progressing. Though, it’s quite normal that it’ll also has its own setbacks. Here are latest trends in the cannabis industry.

Latest Trends and Updates

Technology played a vital role in the progress of the world, and it’s even playing a much more important role in the world of cannabis. There are growing trends that could totally reshape the industry, for the better. Just like how technology has been making things convenient, it has also done drastic improvements to the process in the cannabis industry.

1. Cannabinoid Biosynthesis

This technology uses microorganisms to create even the rarest cannabinoids. This method has proven to lower the costs with its technique. It’s even going to make the industry more productive and increase its yield, regardless of where the growers are located and what kind of weather conditions are present.

With the growing industry, this kind of technology will be able to supply the demands of the consumers. One company, Cronos Group, will have access to Gingko’s microorganism platform that will help them develop about eight cannabinoids for commercial sale.

2. Cannabis QR Codes

One of the latest trends the is the use of QR codes in dispensaries. By scanning these QR codes, you’re able to see when and where the plant was grown. You can also see what makes up the product, which is really useful for customers who are quite specific when it comes to their products. It’s not just easier for customers, it’s easier for budtenders.

This breakthrough in technology was done by BLOCKStrain Technology Corp. They wanted to solve the problem of tracking intellectual properties of companies for their products. The industry is getting more and more competitive, that’s why they aim to solve this by giving consumers the chance to know more about a product and its history.

A crucial aspect of this is the integrity of each and every product. Through this QR codes, consumers are well informed without compromising the data of the company. It’s pretty convenient for both ends, especially since customers are getting more and more curious about how products are made.

3. Cultivation Technologies

Growing marijuana has also been one of the major aspects that was affected by technology.
With technology, the costs have been cut down. Growers are able to optimize their growth and the government can easily monitor the supply chain.

Growers are able to find more ways to make everything more productive. One of these ways is to optimize the lighting technology. The shift from using high-pressure sodium lamps to LED lights have been vital in directing light to the plants. The previous option have been quite costly because they waste energy lighting up other unnecessary areas.
LED lights, on the other hand, have cut down costs and saved a lot of energy. According to growers, they’re even growing a higher quality of cannabis that consumers will definitely benefit from.

The methods of growing have also been drastically upgraded. Gone are the days where fasters just opt for nutrient-rich soil to grow their plants. New methods like hydroponics and aquaponics are taking over the farms. Hydroponics is a method which substitutes soil for a water solution enriched with nutrients needed by the plant.

Aquaponics, on the other hand, is a next-level hydroponics method with add fish and other organism in the water systems to keep it clean and free from parasites. These fishes also contribute their waste to enrich the plants with natural fertilizers.

4. Electricity Storage

One of the giants in the electric industry, Tesla, has found one of the ways for these growers to save up more for farmers. If you’re familiar with power banks, it’s also made possible for small, medium, and even large farms. Although it’s not typically made for the industry, it’s definitely beneficial for it.

Powerwalls and Powerpacks were created by Tesla to store electricity for future use. It’s usually pretty convenient during power outages, especially for growers. Outages usually hamper production which is bad for business. With these products, farmers are able to buy energy during non-peak hours to use during peak hours.

The savings farmers have using these things start off as pennies but once accumulated, they could be really beneficial. It’s not just great for costs, it also helps the environment because Tesla is known for going green.

These are just some of the amazing technological innovations brought about lots of changes that will help growers save money. Whether it’s for saving up energy or for mass producing cannabinoids, technology has greatly helped both producers and consumers.…

10 Mistakes People Make While Dieting, and What to do Instead

Are you desperately looking for ways to lose weight? Well, losing weight is quite a difficult task as sometimes you feel like you’re doing everything right, but still can’t find results.

Or you might interupt your progress by ensuing misguide or outdated advice or methods.

Moreover, if you don’t have any history with disordered eating, then also it is critical to be realistic with your expectations and thus focus on your health. One of the essential tips is to pay attention to your body, treat yourself well, and be kind to yourself.

Common Mistakes Which People Make While They’re on Dieting

1. Eating so much or too few Calories

If you want to lose weight, the first thing which comes to your mind is undoubtedly the calorie deficit. Burning more calories than you consume is not the right way. The traditional time was believed that a decrease of 3500 calories per week would result in 1LBS, which is around 450grams of fat loss. While on the other hand, the research shows that the calorie deficit needed varies.

Decreasing calorie intaking too much can be counterproductive. Studies show that low- calorie diets provide less than 1000 calories per day, which shows they can lead to muscle loss and significantly slow down metabolism.

Do this instead:- Drink as much water as you can! If you can’t stand the blandness of plain water, try adding lemon to your favorite berries, or you can even add mint leaves to it to get some taste.

2. Not Lifting Weights

It is important to perform resistance traning if you’re looking to lose weight quickly. Lifting weights and doing heavy training for gaining muscle is one of the effective startegies which can further help you in increasing metabolic rate. Moreover, lifting weight can improvise your overall body composition and thus helps you to lose belly fat as soon as possible.

Weightlifting or resistance training can surely help you boost metabolic rate, increase muscle mass, and promote fat loss, as well as belly fat.

Do this instead:- Combine for Cardio and resistance training for bad results. If you have enough time, then you can do both cardio as well as strength training on the same day.

3. Consumption of Less Protein

Getting enough protein is extremely important even if you’re trying to lose weight. You can find protein to help you with weight loss in many ways. It can help you reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness, decrease calorie intake, increase metabolic rate, and even protect muscle mass during weight loss.

A study has found that higher-protein diets, containing 0.6 to 0.8 grams of protein per 1LBS may benefit appetite control as well as body composition. Now, to optimize weight loss, make sure each of your meals contains a high protein food.

Do this instead:- Eat fiber as well as protein-rich diets. Oatmeal, nuts, peeled fruits as well as beans are high in soluble fiber, while whole grains, brown rice, leafy vegetables, and fruit skins are good sources of insoluble fiber.

4. Doesn’t Track What you have Eaten

Eating nutritious foods is a good weight loss strategy. However, you might still be eating more calories than you need to lose weight. Further, you might not be getting the right amount of protein, fiber, carbs as well as fat to support your weight loss efforts.

In addition to food, there are a lot of online tracking sites and apps which allows you to enter your daily exercise and one such popular app which we have compared is Noon vs. Weight Watchers. Both applications have different benefits and purposes, as well.

Do this instead:- If still can’t able to lose weight then try using meal planner and fitness tracker to track what you have intake on the whole day. This will give you an idea of what you need to take the most and what you should not!

5. Skipping Meals

Probably one of the biggest mistakes which the majority of people do while losing weight is skipping breakfast or dinner. Well, it might seem logical at first; but you think if you reduce your calorie intake in this way, you’ll lose weight faster. However, skipping meals will also slow down your metabolism and makes you more likely to eat a snack.

Do this instead:- Make sure to eat a healthy, nutrient-rich breakfast that will give you energy as well as prevent you from overeating later.

6. Be over-confident on Weight Loss Pills

Well, if there was a pill which can really work in the long term, then we are not here talking about weight loss management. Today, the weight loss industry is one of the most successful industry as because most of us are so desperate to find a quick fix. The only long term weight effective management skill is to change the way and think about fuelling our bodies.

Do this instead:- Try to avoid these bogus Weight Loss Pills. You need to think of food as a fuel for your daily living and rest takes care of itself.

7. Missing on Vegetables

Vegetables provide antioxidants and fiber that can mainly help you in losing weight, and they are also low in carbohydrates. Now, if you’re among those who are skipping on vegetables, eat the same ones, or don’t eat much, then you must challenge yourself to eat more and more vegetables.

Do this instead:- Make sure you make your vegetables more delicious by adding fresh herbs and spices, or flavored olive oil. You can even use different cooking methods so that it is much more enjoyable.

8. Eating Late Night

We all have listened from our childhood that eating food on time makes you healthier and the more energetic whole day long. Now, if you do get hungry after dinner or have some hunger pains, then it’s your body’s way of communicating to you that it needs more energy.

Well, if you find yourself senseless snacking while watching TV or doing some other stuff then try to put a stop to it.

Do this instead:- The possible is to try to watch movies in the room which is away from your Kitchen, brushing your teeth or having a cup of hot tea instead.

9. Taking Sugar Excessively

Majority of you while on a diet cut offs of drinks and other sweet beverages to lose weight, which is a good thing. However, drinking fruit juice is not that smart decision. Undoubtedly, fruit juice is loaded with sugar, and it might lead to health and weight problems.

Do this instead:- Try to cut off sugar-sweetened beverages as well as fruit juice, as it can help you get rid of sugar and are likely to take in more calories overall.

10. Working Less – But Expecting Too Much!

It is being advised that setting realistic long term goals for weight loss can help you. Understand what you want to lose as much as you can do it as quickly as possible; however, that can only be achieved through crash-dieting, which is not going to help you in maintaining your weight.

Do this instead:- Adjust your expectation and make small and realistic goals. Aim for losing 1 to 2 pounds a week.

The Bottom Line

We have shared some of the most common mistakes which people make while dieting. So, try to avoid all these mistakes and set realistic goals. Now, one major mistake which almost everyone does is we don’t track what we have eaten and what not. So, try to make use of meal planner and fitness tracker simultaneously to get better results.

Did you find any of these mistakes surprising?

Tell us if we have forgotten to add any mistake which you might think mentioned here. For any queries or suggestions do comment below.…

Start a New Year’s Revolution! Make 2008 Your Year for Muscles and Fitness

Most people kick off the new year with a New Year’s resolution or two. You know the kind – “I need to start working out again and lose 10 pounds” or “I’m going to stop smoking… for real this time!” Generally speaking, these well intentioned resolutions are doomed to failure by mid February. But why is this so?

First of all I think we must really get ourselves excited about our new resolutions. We need to have not only a resolution… but a revolution! Yes, a revolution of the mind and body where we toss out the old habits and usher in the new ideas and actions with real purpose, resolve, and zeal! I know what you are thinking… this guy sounds like a nutty cheerleader and he actually said the word “zeal”! Well I may be a bit nutty but I’m on your side and I want to be a cheerleader for you! (Plus, I think the word “zeal” sounds pretty cool. I think I’ll use it more often.)

In order to turn our New Year’s resolution into a New Year’s revolution we must understand a few basic realities. Since this is a fitness and bodybuilding website we will confine our “revolution” to this area. However, all of the principles described here can be adapted to any area of life that your choose.

First you must have a goal

Start with a more easily achievable short term goal such as, I will start an exercise routine for 3 days a week and for 30 minutes each session. The idea will be to improve my fitness and generally tone my body. This is a reasonable program that will ease you into an exercise routine and will not overtax your system. One of the biggest mistakes people make is to overwhelm themselves with a goal that is unrealistic and too difficult to continue with. It is a fact that the mind has a tendency to go toward pleasure and to run away from pain. Keep your short term goal simple and remember that unrealistic goals will only set you up for failure in the long haul.

Now that you have a reasonable short term goal established, you need to develop a long term goal. The long term goal should be an extension of your short term goal. An example would be to kick up the intensity of your exercise program after 3 months and train 4 days a week and for one hour each session. Tell yourself that you will lose 20 pounds of bodyfat or maybe gain 10 pounds of muscle during this next 3 month period. Make this long term goal more challenging but definitely something that is doable and not overly ambitious such as saying that you will compete in a bodybuilding contest after only 6 months of training!

A Plan of Action

Now that you have your short term and long term goals set, you need a well thought out plan of action. This is where you will write down exactly how you will proceed with your new exercise program, such as what exercises you will do, or how many reps and sets, what improvements you need to make in your diet, what food supplements you will need, etc. You can always amend or make changes to your plan as time goes on, just remember to write it down. Putting your plan in writing forces you to commit and makes it less tentative. You are actually writing a contract with yourself and the more detailed it is the better. Without a plan you are like a ship adrift at sea with no direction. Think of yourself jumping into your car to take a ride with no particular place to go or no firm destination in mind. The ride might have been nice but you really went nowhere and accomplished nothing. Remember that people tend to move in the direction of their dominant thoughts. By writing your plan down and reviewing it daily you will be placing it in the front of your thought process all the while affirming to your subconscious mind that this is the correct thing to do. Eventually your body will produce what your mind believes.

Tell Others What You Are Going To Do

It’s easy to let yourself down because you have no one to answer to except yourself. By telling your friends about your new goals and plan of action, you are committing to the world and are more likely to succeed because you don’t want to look foolish to your friends by not carrying out your plan. You are setting yourself up to succeed and hopefully your friends will help the cause by offering their encouragement and zeal (I said it again!)

Let’s Talk About Homeostasis

What the heck is homeostasis and what does it have to do with your new goals or life changes? Homeostasis is a scientific term meaning that your body is always adjusting itself in order to be in a state of equilibrium or balance. Essentially your body likes to stay the same and this is a throwback to our caveman origins when famine and droughts caused havoc to our very existence. The human body actually adapted to these conditions by adjusting our metabolism and body chemistry so that we could live through periods of little food and water. When food and water were once again plentiful we would store fat and build muscle in anticipation of another period of food scarcity. The smaller we were the easier it was for the body to stay the same and keep this self-preservation mechanism going. It was easier for mother nature to keep a small person alive than a large person because they required less food. Over time our human genetics developed so that we had a tendency to stay small for survival purposes. Modern man has, over many thousands of years, grown larger than his caveman cousins mainly because food supplies have improved to the point where starvation is not a constant threat.

So what does all this caveman stuff mean to us modern day muscle and fitness zealots (a form of zeal!)? Simply that even though thousands of years separate us from our caveman ancestors we still carry the genes that want us to stay small though they differ from one person to the next. After a certain point our body stops growing and it naturally tries to stay the same keeping a balance or what science calls a homeostatic state.

As muscle builders this can be a hindrance but it definitely can’t stop us from our muscle and fitness goals. By realizing and understanding that the body doesn’t like to change we can overcome this problem by fooling our bodies by slowly and gently nudging it with our new exercise and diet program. Your body will respond by letting you know that it doesn’t like this new change. Your muscles will be sore and you might not see any progress at first because your body is struggling to stay the same. Eventually your body will give in and start to accept and even like your new fitness lifestyle. So, what’s not to like? After all, your strength will improve, bodyfat will decrease, muscles will grow, heart rate and blood pressure will normalize, and you’ll sleep better and have more energy. A body could get used to all this good stuff.

Keep a Training Log

A training log will show you where you came from and will let you know where you are headed. Keep track of your exercises, sets, reps, poundages, diet, sleep habits, how you felt after training, body weight, measurements, and any other relevant information. By tracking this information you can tell at a glance where you stand in reaching your goal. It may take a few extra minutes of time but in the long run it will be well worth the effort.

Your new fitness and bodybuilding routine will take perseverance and a stick-to-it attitude but now that you know the proper steps to take and the concept of homeostasis I know that you can be successful with your new goals.

Hold it. I think there’s someone in the back row waving their hand. What’s this you’re saying? You are having trouble formulating a plan of action because you don’t know enough about exercise and nutrition? If I may be so bold I would like to recommend to you one of the best and most complete fitness and bodybuilding programs I know (I may be somewhat prejudiced because I wrote it!). It’s called The Guide to Fitness and Bodybuilding – Your First Year and for the price of a meal at a good restaurant you will be taken by the hand and guided slowly but surely from beginner to intermediate and on to advanced training. This program is based on how to overcome our old foe homeostasis by tilting the laws of equilibrium to your advantage so that your fitness and bodybuilding goals will become a reality. The Muscle Beach Hall of Fame Petition Needs Your Support!

Legendary bodybuilder Bill Grant, along with his friends and supporters, has come up with a great idea to construct a Muscle Beach Hall of Fame at Venice Beach in California. The idea is to preserve the history of the sport of bodybuilding and to make it a major tourist attraction benefiting Venice Beach, the city of Los Angeles, and to increase the credibility of bodybuilding in general. This would be a fitting tribute and remembrance to the guys and gals who were the pioneers of bodybuilding and later what was to become the fitness revolution. Early heroes like Steve Reeves, Jack LaLanne, Joe Gold, Armand Tanny, and Zabo Koszewski to name a few, would be honored along with the next wave of greats like Dave Draper, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Franco Columbu, Lou Ferrigno and many others.

As Bill Grant says, “If the NFL and baseball can have their Hall of Fame then bodybuilding should certainly have their Hall of Fame too.” After all, it is largely because of these early pioneers of bodybuilding that we have the current great interest in fitness and health today. It was their trial and error experimentation with training and diet that eventually evolved into today’s current bodybuilding and fitness lifestyle. I would bet that the vast majority of people working out at the shiny health clubs of today know very little about the history of this sport and a Muscle Beach Hall of Fame would be a huge step in educating the public. It would, in fact, become a destination point or mecca for people to come to from all over the world. Venice Beach is already a huge California tourist attraction and the addition of a building housing the Muscle Beach Hall of Fame could have the effect like a “Disneyland of Muscles” in that it would be educational and fun at the same time.

Originally Muscle Beach was located in Santa Monica, California, during the 1940s. Gymnasts and hand balancers would perform for the beach-going sun worshippers and early bodybuilders would train outdoors and get a tan at the same time. Because of a dispute with the city council, Muscle Beach was closed down in Santa Monica. Around 1960, Muscle Beach was relocated to Venice Beach, California. Currently, Venice Beach is the second largest tourist attraction in California right behind Disneyland which is number one. The Muscle Beach area features an outdoor weight training pen with a gigantic cement dumbbell sculpture and a great area for live events. All this, along with the general fun and funkyness of Venice Beach make it the preferred location for the Hall of Fame even though this was not the original Muscle Beach site.

Bill Grant, a bodybuilding legend, was Mr. America (1971) and Mr. World (1974). He has over 40 years of professional experience in bodybuilding, health and fitness and is no stranger to the Southern California bodybuilding scene. Bill has produced and hosted his own successful Comcast Cable television fitness program and radio show on WEVD 1050-AM called “Fit for Life”. He has appeared in numerous movies, theatrical productions, television shows, and commercials. Currently, Bill is president and owner of Bill Grant Nutrition, The Next Generation of Sports and Performance Nutrition.

Bill Grant, Joe Wheatly and the Committee to Build The Muscle Beach Hall of Fame, along with the help of Laree Draper of IronOnline have created a petition so that potential investors, city council and the people of Los Angeles could hear the message. Your support is greatly needed. Please sign the petition to show your support and interest. It will only take a few minutes of your time, but will go a long way in getting this project off the ground. As Bill Grant says, “Let’s keep the dream alive and make this a reality!”…

Sardines: The Nutritional Powerhouse That May Keep You Young!

I was reading an article that caught my attention in a health newsletter by the name of “Alternatives” which is written by Dr. David G. Williams (June 2004, Volume 10, No. 12). Dr. Williams has devoted his life to searching the world for innovative and effective alternative health solutions for the last 20 years. In this article Dr. Williams talks about the many health benefits that can be obtained from eating sardines, with the most intriguing benefit being that it could help slow the aging process!
First let’s start with the fact that sardines are a source of two heart healthy nutrients. The first is CoQ10 (not mentioned in the article) which is not only good for the heart but also promote a healthy immune system, restores vitality, helps maintain healthy gums, and is a potent anti-oxidant. The second heart healthy nutrient is omega-3 oils which also benefit the circulatory system, have anti-inflammatory properties, hydrate the skin, and are also anti-oxidant.

Of particular importance to us bodybuilding and fitness fans is that these little fish are an excellent source of muscle building protein, have no carbohydrates, plus they are high in vitamin D which is necessary for bone growth, immune function, cellular metabolism, and energy production. Sardines are also a good source of calcium which is important for strong bones as well as a host of many body functions.

O.K., now for the good stuff. It seems that sardines are high in nucleotides which are the building blocks from which our bodies create RNA and DNA. DNA carries the genetic codes for making various proteins in the body and RNA helps the process to be carried out. RNA and DNA work as a tag team to help the body repair itself, form new tissue, maintain a strong immune system and perform many other life functions.

Dr. Williams says that dietary nucleotides won’t stop the aging process, but they certainly appear to slow it down and preserve health along the way. He says, “In practically every instance where I’ve seen or received descriptions of someone on a high-nucleotide diet, that person appears to be much younger than their age.”

Some other benefits of nucleotides are:

  • Helps neutralize toxins
  • Increases skin elasticity
  • Increases the body’s ability to heal and repair
  • Enhances the effects of antioxidants
  • Improves the response and efficiency of the immune system
  • Increase cellular metabolism and the production of cellular energy

All of the above benefits should be of great value to everyone, especially fitness and bodybuilding enthusiasts. Although sardines are one of the richest sources of nucleotides there are also other foods that have a high nucleotide content such as brewer’s yeast, anchovies, mackerel, lentils, beans, animal liver, oysters, the green algae chorella, and the blue-green algae spirulina.

Mercury Isn’t a Problem

Sardines have a better chance of being lower in mercury than larger ocean dwelling fish due to their small size and diet. Large fish absorb the mercury and other contaminents of each fish they eat and they live longer allowing more time to accumulate these toxins. Sardines eat mostly krill and plankton, so their chances of obtaining high levels of mercury are very low.

What’s a “True” Sardine?

About 40 years ago a law was passed that allowed manufacturers to market any small, soft-boned fish as a “sardine” in the United States. So the majority of sardines sold in the average U.S. supermarket aren’t really sardines at all. Fish caught in Maine or Canada could be herring and fish from Norway are usually brislings or sprats. While thes fish are still nutritious and good for you, true sardines come from Moroccan, Portugese or Mediterranean waters. Dr. Williams recommends a brand called BELA-Olhão distributed by Blue Galleon from Portugal which are true sardines from extremely clean waters. They taste delicious and don’t have the fishy smell and taste of common sardines. BELA-Olhão cans their sardines fresh within eight hours of the catch and this practice eliminates the fishy smell and captures the delicate flavors. It is common in the industry to freeze sardines before canning, but this is the main reason sardines smell fishy. Blue Galleon BELA-Olhão tests every catch for contaminents and they have full certification with the European Common Market.

BELA-Olhão sardines are not sold in every supermarket but I was able to find them at Trader Joe’s and Mrs. Green’s Natural Food Stores. Trader Joe’s had the lowest price of $1.39 per tin. Dr. Williams has also made arrangements with Mountain Home Solutions who have contracted the manufacturer directly to get them for you just in case you have problems finding them in your area. Call 1-800-211-6532 and ask for service code 67422S.

How Much Should I Eat?

Dr. Williams recommends eating at least two tins of sardines per week. He says if you want to slow the aging process and reap all the other benefits of a high nucleotide diet, sardines are hard to beat and are one of the healthiest foods that he knows of. One caution must be mentioned. Any excess nucleotides that are not converted to RNA or DNA or utilied for energy production are broken down into uric acid. Uric acid can trigger gout symptoms and has been associated with kidney stones. If you have a history of gout it is recommended to increase your water intake and have uric acid levels monitored if you wish to increase nucleotides in your diet.…

Quorn – The New Rage in Healthy Eating!

There’s a new kind of food on the scene today in U.S. natural food stores and the natural food sections in leading supermarkets. As health conscious people on fitness programs, I feel this food deserves our attention. It’s meatless, high in protein, low in fat, all natural, tastes good, comes in many varieties and has a funny name to boot! It’s called Quorn (pronounced “k-worn”) and it is the brand name for a premium line of all-natural, meat-free foods that are produced by Marlow Foods of the United Kingdom. What is unique about this food is that it is made from a fungus similar to that of a mushroom! Now calm yourself down and stop trying to hide under the bed. I know what you are thinking – “Did this man actually say the words “food” and “fungus” in the same sentence?” Yes I did, and if you listen up you will learn about a unique product that might become the new food of the future.

First, let’s start with a bit of history. In the 1960’s nutrition and health experts were concerned that the predicted growth in world population would mean that by the 1980’s there would be a global protein shortage. As a teenager growing up in the 60’s I vaguely remember something being said about this in school. However, at the time I honestly was much more interested in chasing girls and listening to the likes of James Brown, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix, than I was about a global protein shortage. What was there to worry about anyway, when Joe Weider was selling all kinds of protein powder in his muscle magazines? Apparently nutritionists and food scientists took a different view of the situation than I did and they started a search to find new foods which would help to meet the predicted protein doom.

The Development of Mycoprotein

In the early 60’s the discovery of a plant organism (Fusarium Venenatum) occurring naturally in soil, and growing in a field near the village of Marlow in Buckinghamshire, England, gave nutritionists the opportunity to develop a food ingredient given the name Mycoprotein (I looked “myco” up in the dictionary and it means fungus from the Greek “mykes”, thus mycoprotein would mean a protein derived from fungus).

This tiny organism could not initially be grown in large quantities and so several years were spent finding ways of growing it at a larger scale. Thus, in the late 1960’s, initial research and development of mycoprotein began, recognizing its potential as an efficient and effective protein source. But it wasn’t until the early 1980’s that mycoprotein could actually be grown and harvested on a commercial scale. It was found that the most successful way of growing mycoprotein was by fermentation similar to the process used when making products such as yogurt, cheese, and beer. When harvested, mycoprotein has a similar appearance to bread dough and is composed of a mass of very fine fibers. Because of the similarity between mycoprotein and meat fibers, Quorn products have a texture similar to that of lean meat although non-animal in nature.

As it turned out, the 1960’s prediction for a global protein shortage was thankfully wrong. Apparently a slowing in world population growth and improved food production techniques prevented this disaster from happening. However, by this time Marlow Foods had perfected the technique for producing mycoprotein in commercial quantities. This led to the creation of the Quorn product line of meatless mealtime food products released in Europe in the mid 1980’s. Today, over 17 years later, Quorn has been enjoyed by 20 million European consumers with nearly 1 billion servings. There are more than 100 varieties of Quorn all-natural meat free foods available in Europe at this time.

Quorn Comes to America

With the success of its 17 year history in Europe, Marlow Foods decided to launch the Quorn product line in the United States. Since January 2002, Quorn has sold over 2.2 million portions in the U.S. with a current product line of 11 varieties. Some of these varieties include chicken-style nuggets, cutlets, patties, meat-free dogs, sausage style links, turkey style roast, fettuccine alfredo, and lasagna, with new items being offered on a continuing basis.

Of particular interest to fitness and bodybuilding enthusiasts is that Quorn foods taste great and are a good source of quality protein and dietary fiber, have zero cholesterol and are low in fat, especially saturated fat. They contain all eight essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein, and ounce for ounce Quorn has as much protein as egg. The protein quality is very much like whey protein, easily digestible, and great for bodybuilding. They are quick and easy to prepare using a conventional oven or a microwave and make the perfect after workout meal. My own experience with Quorn foods has been very positive. Of the five products that I have sampled, all were light and easy to digest, plus they tasted delicious. A definite thumbs-up in my book!…

Avemar: An Important Natural Cancer Therapy That You Should Know About.

It is absolutely astonishing that one out of three people will experience some form of cancer in their lifetimes. Cancer has officially overtaken heart disease as the number one killer in the United States with the statistics getting worse every day. It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that this year alone in the United States there will be 1,372,910 new cancer cases and 570,260 cancer deaths. The traditional treatments are chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery while anything natural has been largely overlooked by the mainstream oncology community. The reasons given are that the results from natural treatments are largely anecdotal or based on hearsay with little or no significant research or testing to back up the claims.

It is my belief that finally a natural treatment has come to light that shows great promise and has the potential to become an integral part of mainstream cancer treatment. The product is called Avemar and unlike other natural cancer treatments this one has the backing of a significant amount of research in the labratory, on test animals and human cancer patients. The way that I found out about this treatment was by reading about it in Dr. David Williams’ health newsletter called “Alternatives” (Volume 11, No. 3). I am very fond of the newsletter and Dr. Williams’ health discoveries and recommend that you read it also. Just for the record, I receive no financial compensation from Dr. Williams. I just think his health research is interesting and always informative. At the end of this article I will give his website if you are interested in his material.

I had just written an article reviewing Dr. Williams’ report on sardines being a food powerhouse when I saw his very important report on Avemar and felt that readers should be aware of this cancer treatment. You probably haven’t heard about it yet because it is new to the United States, however it is a sure bet that you will hear more about it in the coming months.

The story begins with the late Hungarian biochemist Albert Szent-Györgyi who was awarded the 1937 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. He is also noted for describing the process of cellular metabolism in what is now referred to as the Krebs cycle. After serving in WWI from 1914 to 1916 as a Hungarian medic, Györgyi became interested in cancer research. Sadly losing both his wife and daughter to the disease he was now intent on finding a cure. Györgyi developed his own theories on cancer and as early as 1941 he was exploring the role of unpaired electrons (now referred to as free radicals) and their link to cancer.

Györgyi emigrated to the U.S. after WWII and continued his cancer research. He came up with a theory that certain naturally occuring compounds called quinones (along with similar compounds) could help to control the proper metabolism in cells. Györgyi found that wheat germ was a powerful source for these quinone compounds and he felt that they could be concentrated further through fermentation with baker’s yeast. His early experiments showed promise and his theories about quinones found in wheat germ and their cancer fighting properties appeared to be correct. However, because Györgyi refused to accept government funding and the politics that came with it, his work suffered from lack of financial backing and was largely overlooked. He died in 1986 with his research unfinished.

Dr. Máté Hidvégi to the Rescue

With the fall of communism in Eastern Europe during the early 1990s, the field of scientific research was allowed to open up and Dr. Máté Hidvégi, also of Hungary, resumed and built upon Dr. Szent-Györgyi’s work. It was Dr. Hidvégi who developed the first fermented wheat germ extract for human consumption. Being a devout Catholic Dr. Hidvégi named the early product Avemar in honor of Ave Maria (“Hail Mary” in Latin). Avemar was first launched as a dietary supplement in Hungary in Autumn 1998.

A significant amount of research on Avemar has been done with over 100 reports having been written for presentation or publication since 1996 and 16 peer-reviewed studies are currently accessible on Pub Med (a service of the National Library of Medicine). Probably because it was originally developed there, Hungary has shown the most acceptance with the full support of the Hungarian government and medical community. It has officially been classified there as “a medical nutrient for cancer patients” and has been successfully used for over six years.

How does Avemar Work?

What is interesting about Avemar is that it seems to work on several different levels or mechanisms simultaneously:

Avemar inhibits glucose metabolism in cancer cells.
Cancer cells need large amounts of glucose (sugar) in order to grow and proliferate. They use glucose at a rate of 10 to 50 times higher than that of healthy cells. Healthy cells use glucose mainly for energy whereas cancer cells use glucose for growth. When a person’s glucose is diverted to cancer cells, fatigue sets in and the body begins to waste away. Avemar reduces glucose flow into cancer cells with the result being that the cancer cells begin to use the available glucose to produce substances that inhibit cell growth and cause the cancer cell to die (apoptosis). Cancer patients experience a normalizing of their metalbolism so that they generally feel better, have less fatigue, pain, depression and an increased appetite resulting in weight gain.

Avemar assists the immune system’s ability to identify and destroy cancer cells.
Our bodies have specialized immune cells called natural killer cells (NK cells) that are on a constant mission to destroy any foreign or abnormal cells in our system. However, cancer cells can fool or mislead NK cells by masking their outer membrane with a substance that the NK cells recognize as normal. Avemar suppresses the release of the masking substance allowing NK cells to do their job of killing cancer cells.

Avemar is both a red and white blood cell enhancer.
Studies have shown Avemar increases the regeneration of the blood following radiation and chemotherapy. It seems to restore the bone marrow’s ability to produce red and white blood cells. This is a great help to cancer patients receiving radiation and chemo treatments in that therapy-related side effects like nausea, fatigue, weight loss, etc. could be reduced.

Besides cancer, Avemar may help with Autoimmune diseases.
Although most of the research has focused on cancer, there are some studies in other areas. One animal study on lupus was so promising that a clinical study on human lupus patients is now underway. In another study the anti-inflammatory properties of Avemar were beneficial to rheumatoid arthritis patients who failed to respond to anti-inflammatory drugs and other medications.

Avemar has no toxicity or side effects.
A major problem with conventional therapies such as radiation and chemo are that they have a tendency to destroy normal healthy cells as well as cancer cells. Thus the attempt to kill the cancer cells often kills the patient as well. One of the great things about Avemar is that it does its magic without any toxicity or damage to normal cells plus no adverse side effects have been reported.

Avemar helps to stop cancer from spreading.
Dr. Williams points out a very important finding that is consistent in the Avemar studies. It seems to be particularly effective at reducing metastasis or the spreading of the cancer to other sites in the body. This is probably due to Avemar’s ability to strengthen the immune system which has a direct influence on cancer metastasis.

The following are frequently asked questions about Avemar:

Can Avemar Be Used By Itself?

It has been recommended by the manufacturer that Avemar is best used along with conventional cancer therapies such as radiation, chemo, and surgery. In practically all of the studies it has been used in conjunction with these other standard cancer therapies and its role has been to enhance their effects. The jury is still out on whether Avemar is effective if used by itself. Only further research will be able to answer this question. My personal feeling would be to play it safe and confer with your doctor about the use of Avemar. It’s a good possibility that he doesn’t even know about it yet but word is sure to spread quickly.

Could Avemar be used by otherwise healthy people in an effort to prevent cancer?

Although some animal experiments would suggest this, once again the jury is still out on this issue. Avemar appears to reduce the expression of faulty genes that can trigger cancer, but more research is needed. Dr. Williams feels that unless someone had a known high risk for developing cancer or was in danger of a reoccurence, preventative dietary and lifestyle habits would prove to be more cost-effective. I feel that this is something that should be discussed with a doctor who is familiar with Avemar.

Can someone just eat wheat germ and get the same results?

Unfortunately not. Although wheat germ is a nutritious food, the chemical properties of wheat germ’s components are profoundly altered during the fermentation and production of Avemar making its chemical composition entirely different that that of wheat germ.

How does Avemar taste?

The one downside to Avemar is that it does not have a pleasant taste, probably due to the fermentation process. The manufacturer is working to improve the taste and has developed a new mild orange flavor – better but not great.

How can I find out more about Avemar?

Avemar is produced in Budapest, Hungary by Biromedicine. They have a very good website that has a lot of information at I suggest to go here first (click the English speaking version at the website entrance). the product is being sold under the name Avé in the United States, but it is exactly the same. American Biosciences, Inc. is responsible for making Avemar available in the U.S. and their website is The site is quite sparse but they give a phone number to call for more information: 888-884-7770. Avé is also available through The Harmony Company at 800-422-5518. I tried searching Google (and other search engines) for Avemar and came up with other places to buy the product plus more information. The base price for a 30-day supply of Avé is $179.95 although some sources have lower prices.

I want to make it clear that my purpose for this article is to let everyone know that this seemingly safe and effective product exists. I have received no money or financial compensation for writing this article. I am not a doctor but just happen to think that if you know someone with cancer this could be of great benefit in their treatment therapy. Of course, I highly recommend consulting a doctor before taking this or any cancer therapy.…
